World Lipodystrophy Day (WLD) is observed annually on March 31st to bring awareness to the burden of Lipodystrophy. On this day, patient organizations from countries and regions all over the world hold awareness-raising activities.
The first WLD was celebrated in 2013. It was started by AELIP (Asociación Internacional de Familiares y Afectados de Lipodistrofias) in Spain.
Among goals for this global campaign are:
• Raise awareness about the public health challenges posed by lipodystrophies.
• Launch actions to help prevent the social isolation often experienced by individuals and families affected by lipodystrophies.
• Conduct outreach activities to share the characteristics and unique aspects of lipodystrophies.
• Coordinate efforts with all involved parties—patients, public administrators, healthcare professionals, etc.—to secure resources and improve care for those affected.
Gesture: “L” Campaign — form an “L” using the thumb and index finger of your left hand.
• The gesture symbolizes the “L” for Lipodystrophy.
• It conveys unity and support.
• It represents positivity and a sense of victory.
How can you support World Lipodystrophy Day?

Dr Joe Wiley, CEO of Amryt Pharma:
“Lipodystrophy is a complex and extremely rare disease. People and families with lipodystrophy face an enormous challenge as it can take many years of worsening, distressing symptoms before they get a correct diagnosis and treatment. Education and awareness are critical to improve this diagnostic odyssey and to improve the lives of people living with lipodystrophy. We are delighted to support the global lipodystrophy patient community today on World Lipodystrophy Day.”
Naca Pérez de Tudela, president of AELIP:
“Our objectives for World Lipodystrophy Day include raising awareness of the public health problem posed by lipodystrophy, implementing actions that impact the challenges faced by patients with lipodystrophy and their families, and joining together with the community to pool resources and improve care for those affected by this rare disease.”
