How to Bake a Cake
To make a cake from scratch, you will need common pantry staples like flour, sugar, butter, eggs, milk, baking powder, and vanilla extract. The process involves combining the dry and wet ingredients separately, then mixing them together to form a batter, which is then baked and cooled.
Ingredients for a Basic Vanilla Cake.
This recipe makes one 8 or 9-inch round cake.
- 1 ½ cups (190g) all-purpose flour
- 1 cup (200g) sugar
- 1 ¾ tsp baking powder
- ½ cup (120ml) butter, melted or softened to room temperature
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- ½ cup (120ml) milk
Instructions
Preheat the oven and prepare the pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8 or 9-inch round cake pan with butter or cooking spray, then dust it with flour or line the bottom with parchment paper.
- Combine dry ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour and baking powder.
- Combine wet ingredients: In a separate large bowl, whisk the butter and sugar together until the mixture is smooth and light. Then, add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition, and mix in the vanilla extract.
- Combine wet and dry mixtures: Gradually mix the flour mixture into the butter-egg-sugar mixture, alternating with the milk. Beat on low speed after each addition, mixing only until just combined and no visible flour remains. Avoid overmixing, as this can result in a tough, dense cake.
- Bake the cake: Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top with a spatula. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a wooden toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Cool the cake: Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes on a wire rack. Then, run a knife around the edges to loosen it, and invert the cake onto the rack to cool completely. The cake must be completely cool before you frost it.
